Flooring is one of the most important room elements because it is the foundation of the room and will help to establish color direction and add texture to the room (and possibly even add warmth and comfort depending what type of floor is chosen). You may be happy with your current flooring and there may be no reason to change it, although you may want to add a decorative touch such as an area rug.
There are many different options when selecting flooring, such as carpet, tile, vinyl, laminate, area rugs, wood and cork. Flooring needs to be chosen not only for the decorative aspect but also needs to be chosen with the practicality of use in mind. Questions to ask while you're deciding on a floor: *Does the flooring need to be durable? If so, laminate or tile might be good options as these are both durable products. * Does the flooring need to be easy to clean? If so, vinyl, tile, laminate or wood might be good options. *Does anyone in the household have allergies? If so, you might choose hardwood or tile instead of carpet. *Is it important for the flooring to be warm under your feet? If so, carpet or area rugs might be best. *Is it important for the flooring to be soft under your feet? If so, once again, carpet or area rugs might be best. *Are color and design important factors in your flooring? If so, carpet, area rugs, vinyl or tile can all offer a variety of color and design options. *Does the flooring need to absorb sound? If so, carpet and area rugs are great at absorbing sound. *Does the flooring need to be easy to maintain? If so, vinyl, laminate and tile might be good options and wood is not a very good option. *Is it important for the flooring to be quiet to walk on? If so, carpet and area rugs (and even vinyl) might be good options. When selecting flooring, you will also want to take into consideration how color and pattern can affect the look of a room. Light colored carpet, laminate, vinyl or tile with no pattern can make a room look larger while darker colored patterned carpet or dark wood floors or dark busy patterned tiles can make a room look smaller. Flooring with a horizontal linear pattern (running the width of the room) can make a room look wider while flooring with a vertical linear pattern (running the length of the room) can make a room look longer. Next, you'll want to select an area rug.
